David Lai performed at the Official Launch of LifeAndStyle.com.my here in Kota Kinabalu on May 23rd 2009 and not only impressed guests with his mind magic and skills given his age (23 ladies), many have been talking about him since. To say that David left an impression on us would be summarizing it a little too simply. We present to you Mr. David Lai, Malaysian Mind Magician and Mentalist.
L&S : What is the first thing people say when you introduce yourself as a mind magician?
DL: “What did you say?” On a serious note, that's the first thing people say when I introduce myself as a mind magician. I used to introduce myself as a mentalist and that even got me weirder stares. Sometimes I think it is just easier for me to introduce myself as a magician.
L&S: How did you get into this profession in the first place? Early inspiration?
DL: Puberty and girls. Well, it started off that way I guess . Don't get me wrong though , I always loved magic since I was a little boy, however what got me seriously into it was girls . I thought that learning magic would make my life with the opposite sex much easier.
On magicians inspiring me, my very first experience of a live magic show was when I was 9. A very famous female Japanese magician named Princess Tenko came to Kuala Lumpur and my dad knowing that I loved magic, bought me tickets. It was after the show that I started to research simple tricks but it was the girls that made me serious in performing. Hey, you don't want to show something bad in front of the ladies.
L&S: If you weren’t in this field you would be working as a:
DL: An engineer. That's my academic qualification.
L&S: Most memorable performance?
DL: I've performed for royalty, prime ministers and international celebrities but my most memorable performance would be performing for the very 1st time for an ex girlfriend. It was at a Starbucks in Klang, and she acted cool the whole time not giving me the faintest recognition. I guess she was playing hard to get at that time. We were together for almost 3 years.
L&S: Any mishaps during a show?
DL: You bet. Ironically, I was doing a show with Daphne Iking for a Mercedes event two years ago and everything that could go wrong went wrong. But I guess we all learn from experience. I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong, but it was from an equipment malfunction standpoint.
L&S: The best bit of advice anyone has ever given you?
DL: If you do something that you have passion in, and do it intelligently, money will just have to come in.
